Description
Scanning electron micrograph of spores of the stiff club moss or interrupted club-moss (Lycopodium annotinum). The oldest club moss plants are known from deposits around 420 million years old (Ludlow, Silur) from Australia and were widespread in carbon (350-300 million years ago). The spores have been used for pyrotechnics since the Stone Age. They are used in homeopathy and, because they are highly hygroscopic, were used as children's powder.Scanning electron microscope; magnification 1700x (at 15cm width).
