(L) bronze fish hook and (R) double fish hook from the Lacustrine Habitations of Switzerland. The world's oldest fish hooks were discovered in Sakitari Cave in Okinawa Island dated between 22,380 and 22,770 years old. Fish hooks have been crafted from all sorts of materials including wood, animal and human bone, horn, shells, stone, bronze, and iron. Lacustrine Habitations refer to the remains of human dwellings of great antiquity, constructed on certain lakes in Ireland, Switzerland. They seem to have been villages built on piles in the middle of a lake. Image taken from Primitive Man by Louis Figuier, 1870 (cropped and cleaned).
