Description
The craft of stonemasonry has existed since the dawn of civilization. Masonry is the craft of shaping rough pieces of rock into accurate geometrical shapes, mostly simple, but some of considerable complexity, and then arranging the resulting stones, often together with mortar, to form structures. These materials have been used to construct many of the long lasting, ancient monuments, artifacts, cathedrals, and cities in a wide variety of cultures. This plate is arranged to illustrate the tasks of stonemasons and laborers in the construction of a house (A) hoisting stones all cut to fit; (B) mortaring joints; C) truing a footing; (D and E) marking stones with rule and calipers and cutting them to measure; (F) mixing mortar; (G) mason sawing a large block; and (H, I, K) hauling sand and plaster.
