Artist's Description

Color enhanced transmission electron micrograph (TEM) showing seven streptococci in a lung epithelial cell in an ultra-thin section. The cell is at dying, and six of the seven bacteria are in division. The patient had died of pneumonia. Pneumonia often begins as a viral infection, but can become bacterially overinfected after 1-2 weeks and thus become potentially fatal. In such cases, antibiotics can help. Magnification 20,0001 (at 15x12 cm image size).
