Description
The Invention of Sugar Refinery. Thirteenth plate from a print series entitled Nova Reperta (New Inventions of Modern Times) engraved by Jan Collaert I, after Jan van der Straet, called Stradanus, and published by Philips Galle, c.1600. In the background, sugarcane is harvested. In the foreground, the canes are cut into small pieces. In the middle ground, workers process the sugar by heating it in barrels. On the left side, a water mill provides hydropower. This image has been colorized.
