Description
Macrophotograph of the tentacles of the carnivorous plant Drosera rotundifolia, the sundew, which extend from the leaf surface and are tipped with a sticky secretion. The tentacles are of two kinds; longer marginal ones and shorter inner ones. Insects, attracted by the secretion, become stuck to the tips of the longer tentacles, which bend over bringing the insect towards the shorter ones, forming a tight grip. Proteolytic enzymes secreted by the tentacles digest the insect and the products are absorbed by the leaf. Drosera grows in a nitrogen deficient environment (bogs), which it overcomes by a carnivorous diet.
