Description
Sweet William (Dianthus barbatus) pollen grains. These pollen grains have several small, round germ apertures (colored orange), where the pollen tube shoots out when the pollen lands on a stigma. Sweet William pollen grains have small spines, which allow them to adhere to the hair of insects to be transported to the next flower. This plant is native to the Pyrenees, the Eastern Carpathians, the Balkans, Manchuria, Russia and the People's Republic of China. Varieties grown from this species are used as ornamental plants. Scanning electron microscope, magnification 1000 1 (at 15x12cm image size).
