Scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of a human macrophage on the surface of an alveolus. Found mainly in the liver and lymph nodes, macrophages are a part of the immune system. Their primary function is to ingest (phagocytosis) and destroy anything they do not recognize as healthy tissue. Magnification x 430 (at 4x4').
