Description
The rising convective plume of hot air and combustion products from a burning candle forms a laminar cylindrical flow for several cm above the visible flame. It then undergoes characteristic wavy instabilities for another few cm before erupting into turbulence. In this photograph the candle plume is imaged by the schlieren optical method, which senses the change of air density in the plume. The phenomenon shown here is called laminar-to-turbulent-flow transition. It is one of most difficult phenomena in fluid mechanics to predict accurately.
