Description
Tick feeding on human blood. Color enhanced scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of a tick (Ixodes sp.) with its mouth parts buried in the skin of its human host while feeding on its blood. The legs are protruding from its body either side of the point at which the tick is embedded in the skin. These types of ticks are characterized by a shield-like plate (brown, left) on the back of the body. Ticks are vectors for a number of diseases caused by bacteria or viruses, including Lyme disease, tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) tick typhus and Colorado tick fever. Magnification x42 when printed 10cm wide.
