Description
The Tropical Thornytail Iguana, Uracentron flaviceps, is a canopy dwelling lizard of the upper Amazon Basin. These lizards live in family groups. They feed primarily on ants. The species is sexually dimorphic with females and juveniles wearing shades of green with dark heads. Males have an orange or rust color head with a similarly colored collar. The body is black. Because these lizards are canopy dwelling, few specimens had been seen or collected until canopy equipment brought scientists to the forest canopy to study the lizards. This specimen was photographed in Amazonian Peru in 2010.
