Ultrasound is a non-invasive, safe method to look at the unborn fetus to check that the baby is developing normally. The newest ultrasound equipment is very advanced and provides clear images of the fetus's anatomy. In this case, a third trimester fetus is shown from the side. The baby's arm and hand are held up towards the face. The profile of the head is seen, including the nose, chin and forehead. On the right side of the image is the baby's thigh, knee and a small portion of the lower leg. The amniotic fluid (black) around the baby provides an "acoustic window" through which the ultrasound is transmitted to and returned from the fetus.
