Description
Anterolateral view of torso, revealing the upper digestive tract. The upper digestive system is involves the ingestion and propulsion of food and is composed of the oral cavity, teeth, tongue, salivary glands, pharynx, and esophagus. Mechanical and chemical digestion begin in the mouth with mastication (chewing), aided by the secretion of saliva. Swallowing pushes the food through the pharynx to the esophagus, where it then moves to the stomach via peristalsis.
