Description
Energy drinks are packed with sugars and other compounds to promise to keep you mentally awake and bursting with energy. One of these compounds is taurine (2-aminoethanesulfonic acid). Taurine is synthesized in the pancreas by a series of reactions called the cysteine sulfinate acid pathway. It is found in many tissues in the body and in bile, a substance in our the liver which helps to break down the fat in our food. It is also found in muscle tissue of meat and fish in our diet therefore vegetarians would consume less taurine and strict vegans consume little to none. A single serving of an energy drink may contain 1-2g of Taurine. Small amounts of Taurine are required for muscles to work correctly and keep the liver healthy. When printed 10cm wide, magnification x70.
