Color enhanced scanning electron micrograph of Vancomycin Resistant Enterococci (VRE). Strains of the bacteria, Enterococci, that are resistant to the antibiotic vancomycin, known as Vancomycin Resistant Enterococci, were found in France in 1986. Illness due to VRE infections in healthy people is rare. Common infections caused by enterococci are urinary tract inections and wound infections.
