Description
A pond skater, or water strider, insect (family Gerridae) standing on the surface of pond water. The insect was photographed through an interferometer which detects interference patterns in water surface tension made by the water strider as it walks on the water. Water striders move by making rowing motions with their middle legs laid flat on the water. The hind legs steer the creature while the forelegs are used for catching prey. The movement is jerky often with jumps to considerable distances but the surface of the water is never broken. The body of the insect is covered with silver, water repellent hairs.
