Painting by Frederick Kemmelmeyer of General George Washington reviewing the Western army at Fort Cumberland the 18th of October, 1794 before their march to suppress the Whiskey Rebellion in western Pennsylvania. The conflict was a result of the western US being dissatisfied with various policies of the eastern-based national government. The name "Whiskey Rebellion" comes from a 1791 excise tax on whiskey that westerners protested to. The tax was a part of treasury secretary Alexander Hamilton's program to centralize and fund the national debt.
