William Harvey demonstrating his theory of the circulation of the blood to King Charles I. Harvey (1578-1657), an English physician, was the first Western doctor to correctly detail the circulatory system. His work 'De Motu Cordis' remains a milestone in science. Its full title is "Exercitatio Anatomica de Motu Cordis et Sanguinis in Animalibus (An Anatomical Exercise on the Motion of the Heart and Blood in Animals)." Charles I (1600-1649) was King of England from 1625 to 1649, at which time he was beheaded during the Second Civil War.
