World map. Computer graphic of the World displayed on two crystal boards against a background of stars. On the left board are the continents of Asia, Europe, Africa and Australia. On the right board is the continent of America. The crystal has grooves in it; the vertical grooves represent lines of longitude and the horizontal ones are lines of latitude. The map is displayed as a Mercator projection, a technique of showing the spherical Earth on a flat surface. Though this technique retains the true shape of land masses, it exaggerates the size of those near the polar regions.
