Description
The Wupatki Pueblo was built in the 12th Century CE after the eruption of Sunset Crater left the region's soil good for farming. Three separate cultures came together in the area the Sinaqua, Cohonina, and Kayenta Anasazi. These Ancestral Puebloans cultivated corn and squash, but deserted the pueblo by 1250 partially due to extended drought conditions. Wupatki National Monument, northwest of Flagstaff, Arizona, houses about 800 identified dwellings.
