Description
Light micrograph of the xylem vessels in a pine branch. Xylem tissue is responsible for the upward transport of water and solutes from the roots to the stem and leaves. These elongated vessels may be reinforced with spiral bands. Between some of these conducting vessels can be seen bubbles of air. In mature woody plants, xylem makes up the bulk of vascular tissue in the stems and branches. Magnification is x160 at 35mm.
