Description
Laulao Catfish (Brachyplatystoma vaillanti). Dozens of species of catfish call the Amazon home. Across most of the river and its tributaries, light is blocked out by the turbid waters so that by 40 or 50 feet in depth, the water column is dark. Much of the Amazon is considerably deeper than these depths. In as much, there is a lot of habitat available to fish living in the Amazon that doesn't experience lit conditions. Of the large catfish that lurk in the deep waters of the Amazon are members of the genus Brachyplatystoma. This is a juvenile Brachyplatystoma vaillanti, a species that can attain lengths of 4 to 5 feet. Unfortunately for this catfish, its meat is prized and a tremendous harvest pressure has decreased population sizes. It is known as the Laulao catfish.
