Description
Barrens Buck Moth (Hemileuca maia) female on post oak (Quercus stellata). This species flies in the fall and lays eggs in a ring on a twig of foodplant that overwinter. In the mid-atlantic and northeastern US this species is generally found in barrens habitats and on mountain ridges that are populated with Scrub Oak. This female was photographed in October at the Goat Hill Serpentine Barrens a Pennsylvania State Forest Natural Area.
