Description
Coal Fossil - Cast and Mold of Calamites Stem - Internal cast and external mold of a Calamites stem. Carbon layer in between is compacted organic material. A tree-like relative of inconspicuous modern horsetails, Calamites grew as a tree that could reach 100 feet. The trunks of Calamites had a distinctive, segmented, bamboo-like appearance and vertical ribbing. The branches, leaves and cones were all borne in whorls. The leaves were needle-shaped, with up to 25 per whorl. Its one-foot diameter trunk was hollow, with bark and wood only about 1/2" thick. Bands around its circumference were nodes where leaf whorls (Annularia) and cones grew from the trunk and stems. Specimen courtesy of Penn State University Museum of Geology.
