Description
TEM of Campylobacter jejunii. Campylobacteria are bent, almost spiral-shaped rod bacteria. They move with the help of their flagella propelling them forward. They thrive only at low oxygen levels, approximately 5%. The bacteria is transmitted through poultry and beef, including milk! The incubation period of C. jejunii is 2-5 days. After they are consumed orally, C. jejunii infects the intestinal mucous membranes, where they cause inflammation. This leads to bacterial enteritis and enterocolitis. A fever of 40 degrees C is possible. The diarrhea begins explosively with up to 20 events per day. This eases up in 5-7 days. As the infection takes its course, victims are treated with fluids and electrolytes. Magnification = 25,000x.
