Description
Cattle such as the one pictured here, which are affected by BSE, experience progressive degeneration of the nervous system. Behavioral changes in temperament (e.g., nervousness or aggression), abnormal posture, incoordination and difficulty in rising, decreased milk production, and/or loss of weight despite continued appetite are followed by death in cattle affected by BSE. BSE has been linked to the fatal human condition vCJD (new variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease). Both these diseases are caused by abnormal virus-like forms of the prion protein PrP gradually destroying the brain.
