Description
Tsukuda Island in Musashi Province is a woodblock print by the Japanese ukiyo-e artist Hokusai. The twenty-ninth print in Hokusai's series Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji. Shows several small boats poling toward Tsukudajima, an island, and one larger boat loaded with produce headed toward the mainland. Mount Fuji is a frequent subject of Japanese art especially after 1600, when Edo (Tokyo) became the capital and people saw the mountain while traveling on the Tokaido road. The mountain is mentioned in Japanese literature throughout the ages and is the subject of many poems. Mount Fuji is one of Japan's "Three Holy Mountains". The ukiyo-e genre of art flourished in Japan from the 17th through 19th centuries.
