Description
A retina affected by proliferative diabetic retinopathy (PDR) has developed new abnormally weak blood vessels on its surface and into the vitreous gel. These vessels rupture easily releasing blood into the vitreous causing vision obstruction. They can also leak fluid into the center of the macula causing macular edema and blurred vision. Blood clots and weak vessels can form scar tissue which shrinks and pulls on the retina. This sometimes causes tractionl retinal detachments.
