Description
The Snipe Eel, Nemichthys scolopaceus, inhabits tropical and subtropical ocean depths around the world. It eats crustaceans, particularly mysid shrimp and prawns. Male and female Snipe Eels are sexually dimorphic. Females retain the long, bird-like beak but as males mature, they lose the beak. Males and females look so different when mature that they were once thought to be different species. This individual was captured between the surface and 1200 meters depth in the Gulf of Mexico, 2011.
