Description
Light micrograph of squamous (flat and scale-like) epithelial cells from the human mouth. The bright spot within each cell is the nucleus. The epithelia are a diverse group of tissues that cover the entire external surface of the body and line all the hollow structures (except blood and lymph vessels). The cells rest on a basement membrane which separates the epithelium from underlying connective tissue. Blood vessels do not extend beyond the basement layer. Instead the epithelial cells are dependent on the diffusion of oxygen and metabolites from underlying tissue.
