Color enhanced portrait of John Adams (1735-1826), the second president of the United States from 1797 to 1801. A Harvard-educated lawyer from Massachusetts, Adams served in diplomatic roles during the American Revolution. He served two terms as Vice President under George Washington before becoming President. Adams assigned Thomas Jefferson the role of drafting the Declaration of Independence in 1776. During his presidency he fought the Quasi War with France, which he ended through diplomacy, signed the Alien and Sedition Acts, and appointed John Marshall to Supreme Court.
