Description
The Ozark blind cave salamander is an obligate cave dwelling species in adulthood. The aquatic larvae can live in surface streams and have functional eyes. When the larvae metamorphose, they lose their eyes and pigment. Because they don't have pigmentation as adults, they are ideal for marking with acrylic elastomer. The adult depicted here has been marked on the left side of its tail. This individual had been marked 15 months earlier as an aquatic larvae.
