Some strains of S. aureus are capable of producing a protein toxin that causes staphylococcal food poisoning in humans. The onset of symptoms in staphylococcal food poisoning is rapid and acute, depending on the amount of contaminated food eaten and the amount of toxin in the food. The most common symptoms are nausea, vomiting, abdominal cramping, and retching. In more severe cases, headache, muscle cramping, changes in blood pressure and pulse rate may occur. Recovery generally takes two days,
