Description
An illustration of an Archimedes' screw (also called an Archimedes screw, an Archimedean screw or a screwpump). This is a device invented by Archimedes in the 3rd century BC to transfer water from a lower level into higher irrigation ditches. Turning the screw inside the hollow pipe lifts the water.
