Description
TEM of gram-negative rod bacteria, Legionella pneumophila. They inhabit every form of water from 5-65 degrees C. They are highly resistant to heat and acidity. L. pneumophila is transmitted to people by inhalation of infected water drops, for example moisture from air conditioners. Once inhaled, they trigger an inflammatory response in the lungs, known as pneumonia. The symptoms of pneumonia include fever, coughing, headache and diarrhea. It can be fatal if left untreated in approximately 80% of cases. If treated with antibiotics, pneumonia is only fatal in 5-10% of cases. Magnification = 25,000x.
