Description
Diaphus theta, the Blunt Face Lampfish or the California Headlightfish, has two bioluminescent organs on its face that look like headlights on a car. There are also photophores on its sides. The range of this species crosses the northern Pacific from Japan to California. Specimens have been collected as deep as 2600 feet. This specimen was trawled from 1000 feet depth off of Monterey, California, in November 2009.
