Description

This illustration depicts a California offshore kelp forest, including the unique ecosystem at its base. Marine animals include seals, reef and kelp fish, spiny lobsters, crabs, moray eels, and octopus. The rocky bottom gives the kelp base, called a "holdfast", a surface to anchor the huge stalks of kelp, which can grow to over 100 feet.
