Description
Entitled "Captain Cook's ships at Christmas Harbor, in Kerguelen Islands." The Kerguelen Islands, also known as the Desolation Islands, are a group of islands in the southern Indian Ocean. They are among the most isolated places of Earth. The islands were officially discovered by the French navigator Yves-Joseph de Kerguelen-Trémarec in 1772. Cook verified and confirmed the passage of de Kerguelen by discovering and annotating the message left by the French navigator, December 1776. Captain James Cook (November 7, 1728 - February 14, 1779) was an English explorer, navigator and cartographer in the Royal Navy. He mapped lands from New Zealand to Hawaii in the Pacific Ocean in greater detail and on a scale not previously achieved. He surveyed and named features, and recorded islands and coastlines on European maps for the first time. He displayed a combination of seamanship, superior surveying and cartographic skills, physical courage and an ability to lead men in adverse conditions.
