Alcoholism. French engraving from the 1770s of two alcoholics. The inebriated statesman at right, whose wig is falling off, is being offered another drink by the statesman at left. Underlying this caricature of alcoholism is the seriousness of the disease. Alcohol is an addictive substance which can cause irreversible damage to the heart, liver, brain and nervous system. Engraving by John Collier (1708-1786), May 1773. Tim Bobbin is the pseudonym of John Collier.
