Description

Color-enhanced SEM of damaged cow hair. As temperatures decline during the fall, cattle kept outdoors (in contrast to those kept in barns) grow a longer hair coat, which provides a much higher level of insulation by trapping more pockets of air within the hair. Letting cattle adapt naturally to cooling temperatures is a good strategy which reduces overall stress on the animals.
