Description
Some plants of the milkweed family produce carrion flowers, or flowers that emit a pungent odor resembling decaying flesh, to attract flies and carrion beetles. Flies and carrion beetles are the primary pollinators for the plants. The South African Giant Toad Plant, Stapelia gigantea, produces a beautiful but malodorous flower. Photographed in 2009.
