Description
Photomicrograph of Francisella tularensis bacteria using a methylene blue stain. The bacterium F. tularensis is considered to be a dangerous potential biological weapon because of its extreme infectivity, ease of dissemination, and substantial capacity to cause illness and death. Francisella tularensis is a Gram-negative rod-shaped (though pleomorphic) bacillus bacteria, which is non-motile. It is an insect-borne pathogen of rabbits, squirrels and other rodents in many countries notably the west USA and in Russia. Ticks, fleas, flies, may transmit the organism. Treatment is with antibiotics.
