Description
Full Moon. Full moon surrounded by a starfield. The visible side of the Moon, as seen from Earth, is characterized by large dark areas known as "mare" or "seas". The seas have fewer craters which suggests that these basins were filled in recent geological times by volcanic material. There are, however, many craters in the lighter regions seen here. The Moon is the only natural satellite of the Earth. It has a diameter of 3476 kilometers, and lies some 384,000 kilometers away from the Earth. The Moon's rotation period around the Earth (27.3 days) equals its period of revolution, which is why it always keeps the same face turned towards us.
