Description
Color enhanced scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of a macrophage white blood cell (brown) attacking Borrelia sp. bacteria. The macrophage has extended a long pseudopodia towards the bacteria prior to engulfing them. Once engulfed in process known as phagocytosis, the bacteria will be destroyed. Macrophages are white blood sp. cells that form in the bone marrow and can patrol a large area. They are an important component in our immune system and attack many types of foreign organisms. Borrelia causes Lyme disease and relapsing fever. Magnification 1,000x.
