Description
SEM of a macrophage overtaking Borrelia bacteria, a spirochete. The protruding, exploring arms of the phage surround and consume the foreign body. Macrophages are part of the immune system. They are responsible for removing "intruders" and dead or degenerating cells from the body. They are manufactured in the bone marrow. When circulating in the bloodstream, macrophages take their spherical form, which allows them to penetrate into body tissues. Once inside the tissue, they completely alter their shape, in order to cover a larger area, as shown here. Magnification = 1,000x.
