Description
"War Record," watercolor, ink and pencil on muslin, by Whie Swan (c. 1851-1904), a member of the Crow tribe, and a scout for the cavalry at the Battle of Little Bighorn, which this three-tiered composition depicts. Using separate vignettes, White Swan represents three separate deeds he performed in battle striking an enemy with a lance, spying with a telescope, and firing a rifle.
