Description
Diagram of the Planck space observatory's cooling system. The observatory's sensitive instruments must be cooled to temperatures just above absolute zero so that their heat does not swamp the faint microwave signals they are designed to detect. This is achieved in stages; the last cooling stage is pictured here. Planck was launched in 2009. Its objective is to survey the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB), the radiation left over from the Big Bang.
