Description
An illustration of the planet Pluto. Pluto is the most distant planet in the solar system, orbiting the Sun in 248 Earth years at a distance of around 6000 million kilometers, nearly 40 times the distance of Earth from the Sun. Pluto is also the smallest of the planets. It has a diameter of about 2274 kilometers, less than a fifth that of Earth. It and its moon Charon (not seen) comprise rocks and ices. The ices are mainly water, with some nitrogen and methane. A very thin atmosphere (mostly nitrogen) is evolved when Pluto is closest to the Sun. Otherwise, the surface temperature is mostly below -200 degrees Celsius.
