Description
Rowan pollen grains. Colored scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of several pollen grains from the rowan, or mountain ash (Sorbus sp.). The grains have a hard outer coating (exine) which protects them from damage. The rough, holed surface of these grains is useful for helping the pollen stick onto insects which feed on the tree's flowers. The movement of insects from one flower to another helps disperse the pollen. Pollen carries the male reproductive cells of the plant. Rowan is a small tree or shrub which is common throughout Europe. It can adapt to practically any environment. Magnification x400 at 6x7cm size.
