Description
Color enhanced scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of a human kidney. The kidney is the filter organ of the body. The picture shows the finest loops of a renal corpuscle (Malpighi corpuscle) from the kidney cortex. In these vessels the urine substances (metabolic waste products) are separated from the blood. Several labyrinthically entwined cells surround a blood vessel. This filter passes molecules up to the size of a sugar molecule and supplies the remaining waste water to the renal tubules of the bladder. The regulation of the water and electrolyte balance of the body and the production of renal hormones (prostaglandin, renin, erythropoietin, vitamin D3, kinins) takes place in the kidney. Magnification 70001 (at 15x12 cm image size).
